OBJECTIVE: To elucidate the inhibitory action of Decorin on subconjunctiva scarring, and provide theory bases for the clinical results. METHODS: Reichel's model of conjunctival scarring was used. Thirty-six rabbits (72 eyes) were divided into Decorin group (n = 24), PBS group (n = 24) and normal controls (n = 24). A Schotz ophthalmotonometer was used to measure intraocular pressure (IOP). Sirius Rose BB staining was performed to identify I or III type collagen at different time points. RESULTS: Decorin effectively inhibited conjunctival scarring and kept IOP lower. Expression of I or III type collagen were significantly decreased in the Decorin group. CONCLUSION: As a neutralizing agent, Decorin could reduce subconjunctival scarring after filtration surgery.
