Optic neuropathy and normal tension glaucoma

Normal tension glaucoma (NTG) is caused by various factors including ischemia or genetic abnormalities. Recently, it has been reported that some patients with autosomal dominant optic atrophy, Leber's hereditary optic neuropathy, and arteritic anterior ischemic optic neuropathy exhibit similar optic nerve structures to those found for NTG patients. This points out the importance and the difficulties of correctly diagnosing NTG and other optic neuropathies. Additionally, the pathogenesis of optic neuropathies such as genetic or ischemic factors may be related to the pathogenesis of NTG. Further examinations of the close relationship between optic neuropathies and NTG may lead to a clearer and better-defined classification of NTG. LA: Japanese
