AIM: To study the mechanism and effect of acupuncture and moxibustion on optic system and to define the role of the center nerve among the optic nerve during the process that the acupuncture affects the visual function. METHODS: The rabbits models with one-eye optic nerve broken off were built by breaking the connection between retina and centrum but keeping the cycle of retinal blood. Then the effect of electrotherapy on the FERG of the double eyes was observed and the mechanism wasstudied by comparing the two eyes. RESULTS: The center nerve reaching down to control the retina was also be cut off when cutting the optic nerve. Both the FERG in the operated-eyes before after operation and that in the operated-eyes and in the control eyes changed with no statistical significance. After acupuncture at the Hegu point, both the FERG in the operated-eyes and the control eyes changed with the same trend, but the breadths of the changing were different: the ERG in the control eyes has longer time and lower swing of wave a or b than the that in the operated-eyes. CONCLUSION: The center nerve has certain effect during the process that the acupuncture affects the FERG of the rabbits, but the main way is not by the down restraint of the centrum, and acupuncture can affect the retina limitedly by affecting center nerve. Without the action of center nerve, the effect of acupuncture still exists, therefore the mechanism may involves other ways. LA: Chinese
