PURPOSE: To evaluate the optic disc by means of fundus photograph and Heidelberg Retina Tomograph II (HRT II). CASES AND METHODS: This study was made on 25 eyes of primary open-angle or normal-tension glaucoma. The fundus was photographed with a conventional fundus camera at the angle of 20 degrees. The color fundus photograph was then subjected to manual planimetry to delineate the border of disc cupping. The thus obtained rim area/disc area ratio (R/D ratio) was compared with the finding by HRT II. Findings: The R/D ratio averaged 0.36 ± 0.10 by fundus photograph and 0.40 ± 0.15 by HRT II. The difference was not significant (p = 0.3). The R/D ratio was positively correlated with mean deviation (MD) of static visual field (p = 0.002 for fundus photograph, p = 0.001 for HRT II). CONCLUSION: Evaluation of optic disc is possible either by planimetry of fundus photograph or HRT II, as both methods result in essentially equal findings. LA: Japanese
