AIM: To evaluate the clinical effects of phacoemulsification with foldable posterior chamber intraocular lens (PC-IOL) implantation in the treatment of acute angle-closure glaucoma with cataract. METHODS: Twenty-two cases (25 eyes) with acute angle-closure glaucoma and cataract undergoing phacoemulsification with PC-IOL implantation were retrospectively studied, including 11 eyes with primary acute angle-closure glaucoma and 14 eyes with secondary acute angle-closure glaucoma. The postoperative follow-up was 7mo to 3a (mean 16.50 ± 9.80mo). RESULTS: The intraocular pressure was reduced from a preoperative mean of (28.35 ± 15.70) mmHg to a postoperative mean of (10.55 ± 5.08) mmHg (t = 4.732, P < 0.001). The mean anterior chamber depth was increased from a preoperative mean of (1.08 ± 0.75) mm to a postoperative mean of (2.37 ± 0.48) mm (t = 6.632, P < 0.001). The best-corrected visual acuity was improved in all eyes. CONCLUSION: Phacoemulsification with posterior chamber foldable intraocular lens implantation can be a good and effecive alternative in treating acute angle-closure glaucoma with cataract.
