Sensorineural hearing loss in pseudoexfoliation syndrome and glaucoma

OBJECTIVE: Several studies suggest that pseudoexfoliation (PEX) syndrome is not only a disease of the eye but also a systemic problem. The aim of this study was to show a possible relationship between PEX syndrome and sensorineural hearing loss. MATERIAL AND METHODS: A total of 54 patients with PEX attending the glaucoma section of our outpatient clinic between March 2003 and June 2003 were included and classified in 3 groups. Routine ocular examinations were performed in 19 patients with PEX glaucoma (group 1), 17 subjects with PEX syndrome (group 2), and 18 patients without PEX (group 3). In addition otolaryngological examination for pure tone threshold audiometry test (between 250-6000 Hz) and tympanogram were performed and the results were compared between three groups with regard to hearing thresholds. RESULTS: A total of 108 ears in 54 patients (28 females and 26 males) were examined in the study. The median age was 68.3 4 in group 1, 69.5 3 in group 2, and 68.2 5 in group 3. There was no difference the three groups in terms of median ages. The groups were compared for air and bone hearing thresholds, hearing reception thresholds, pure tone medians and speech discriminations. Statistical analysis yielded no significant difference between three groups with regard to the measured parameters (p > 0.05). Mild, moderate or severe sensorineural hearing loss was present in 84.21% of the patients in group 1, 76.47% in group 2 and 63.88% in group 3. However, a significant difference was not present when compared to an age-matched control group (p > 0.05). CONCLUSION: According to the comparison of audiometric analysis with the age and sex matched control group, no statistical difference of hearing loss in any frequency was determined between PEX glaucoma, PEX syndrome patients.
