AIM: To study the effect of surgery in the treatment of late-stage glaucoma. METHODS: Different surgeries including trabeculetomy with adjunctive mitomycinc, cataract extraction with goniopuncture, cyclocryotherapy, catract extiaction combined with trabeculetomy ect were applied in 56 patients (57 eyes) with late-stage glaucoma. RESULTS: Visual acuity was increased in 28 eyes (49%), no change in 25 eyes (44%), and decreased in 4 eyes (7%) after the operations. Visual field improved in 18 eyes (69%) 6 months after the operation. Preoperatively, the mean IOP was 49.76 mmHg (1 mmHg = 0.133kPa) After the mean 18-month follow-up period, the mean postoperative IOP was lowered to 21 mmHg in 82% patients, which was 93% in the control group. All symptoms were decreased after the operation. CONCLUSION: It is important to perform the surgery to rescue visual acuity, visual field, and alleviate suffering of patients with late-stage glaucoma. LA: Chinese
