PURPOSE: To evaluate the hypertensive effect of topical latanoprost alone and additional timolol gel ophthalmic solution. Material and METHOD: This study was made on 32 eyes of 32 patients with normal-tension glaucoma. Their age ranged from 38 to 69 years, average 55 years. Latanoprost was instilled for 4 weeks followed by additional timolol-gel for another 4 weeks. Intraocular pressure (IOP) was measured every 4 weeks for a total of 8 weeks. The baseline IOP averaged 14.9 ± 2.3 mmHg. RESULTS: IOP after latanoprost for 4 weeks averaged 12.2 ± 2.3 mmHg. The difference from baseline IOP was significant (p < 0.01). IOP after additional timolol gel for 4 weeks averaged 11.2 ± 2.8 mmHg. The difference from IOP after latanoprost alone was significant (p < 0.01). CONCLUSION: Instillation of latanoprost alone induced significantly decreased IOR Additional timolol gel induced further decreased IOP. It was also effective in eyes that responded poorly to latanoprost alone. LA: Japanese
