OBJECTIVE: To know the rate of occurrence of steroid induced glaucoma in the treatment of vernal conjunctivitis. METHODS: A longitudinal study was conducted among 50 patients of vernal conjunctivitis at the age group of 5 - 30 years attending Ophthalmic Out-Patient Department of Regional Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS), Imphal, during March 2002 to March 2004. Dexamethasone (0.1% eye drop were instilled and intraocular pressure (IOP) were checked at 15 days interval for 180 days and compared with the previous readings. RESULTS: 15 patients (30%) out of 50 were found raise of intraocular pressure above the original value with 3 patients above 29 mmHg at the end of 180 days. The disease was more common in boys and the highest incidence was in the age group of 11 - 15 years. CONCLUSION: Dexame-thasone (0.1%) eye drop is quite effective in the treatment of vernal conjunctivitis. But with increasing duration of its applications, there is increased frequency of raised of intraocular pressure. The intraocular pressure can be brought down to normal after discontinuation of dexamthasone eye drop.
