PURPOSE: To report the outcome of short-term prone-position test in angle-closure glaucoma. CASES AND METHOD: This clinical trial was entered by 186 eyes of 93 cases of closed angle glaucoma. Iridectomy or iridotomy had been performed on 148 eyes. Patients were asked to remain in prone position for 15 minutes. Intraocular pressure (IOP) was measured every 5 minutes by means of a hand-held Tono-PenR. RESULTS: Rise of IOP after 15 minutes ranged from nil to 14 mmHg, average 6.0 mmHg. IOP rose by 8 mmHg or more in 55 eyes (29.6%). CONCLUSION: In conventional provocation test, the test person has to remain in prone position for 60 minutes. The present studies show that IOP may rise within 15 minutes predisposed eyes. Repeated tonometry every 5 minutes may indicate the outcome of prone-position test after one hour. LA: Japanese
