Screening for glaucoma: evaluating visual function

Gonzalez de la Rosa M; Gonzalez Hernandez M

The properties required for a useful glaucoma screening method are described: sensitivity, specificity, speed, simplicity, accuracy, technical rigor, objectivity, reproducibility and facility of interpretation. Some tests such as color vision or blue/yellow perimetry have normality values that are excessively scattered. Some other tests such as oculo-kinetic perimetry (OKP) lack objectivity and technical rigor. Automatic static perimetry using rapid perimetric strategies such as SITA and TOP is the most efficient method nowadays. New perimetric methods, such as frequency doubling perimetry (FDP), flicker perimetry, color and motion perimetry are described.
