Genetics and glaucoma

Wiggs JL
Ophthalmology Clinics of North America 2000; 13: 481-488

The recent advances of the human genome project have made genetic analysis of many human disorders possible including hereditary forms of glaucoma. This article reviews the genetics of congenital glaucoma, the developmental glaucomas including Rieger anomaly, pigmentary glaucoma, pseudoexfoliation glaucoma and adult and juvenile primary open-angle glaucoma. The future clinical use of genes associated with glaucoma for DNA-based diagnosis and gene-based therapeutics is discussed.
