The angle-closure glaucomas are a diffuse group of disorders characterized by the final common endpoint of iridotrabecular contact and elevated intraocular pressure. Understanding the anatomic and pathophysiologic mechanisms involved in the etiology of the various forms of angle closure is critical for both diagnosis and management. This review discusses the classification, etiology, and therapy of the various types of angle-closure glaucoma and the role that ultrasound biomicroscopy has played in helping understand this heterogeneous disease.
