Although the pathophysiology of glaucoma is not fully understood, elevated intraocular pressure is considered an important factor in the development of the disease. Therefore, the aim of treatment in glaucoma is to reduce intraocular pressure. Five major classes of drugs are used in the topical treatment of glaucoma, with prostaglandin analogues and β-adrenoceptor antagonists as first-line therapies. Combination therapy with more than one class of medication may be required.
