OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the inhibiting effect of viper venom drug (Ahalysantipfarciasi) on scar formation following glaucoma filtration surgery, as well as its ocular toxicities. Methods: Twenty eyes of ten rabbits underwent sclerectomy. Viper venom drug (5 x 10-2 U/ml, 0.5 ml) was given three times to one eye every other day (the experimental group). The same volume of saline solution was applied to the opposite eye (the control group) in the same rabbit. On day 21, rat-tail collagen as a tracer of the aqueous humor outflow was perfused into the anterior chamber of both groups at equal, steady IOP pressure. The eyes were subjected to fixation in situ and the morphology of the operated tissue was observed by light microscopy. RESULTS: The filtering blebs of five and three eyes had survived on days 14 and 21, respectively, in the experimental group, but none had survived in the control group. The eyes without bleb had closure of the sclerostomy with scar tissue and TF proliferation in the episclera. The aqueous humor tracer could be found flowing out into the bleb in those with bleb formation. CONCLUSIONS: 5 x 10-2 U/ml of the drug can inhibit scar formation following glaucoma filtering surgery. No ocular toxicity was evident. LA: Chinese
