OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the proper application of mytomycin C (MMC) and 5-fluorouracil (5-Fu) in glaucoma filtering surgery. METHODS: Ninety-eight cases (108 eyes) were randomly divided into three groups, including 30 eyes in the MMC group, 40 in the 5-Fu group, and 38 in the control group. 0.2 mg/ml MMC was used during the trabeculectomy in MMC group. 5-Fu (5 mg) was injected subconjunctively 6 ˜ 8 times postoperatively in the 5-Fu group. No drug was used in the control group. The follow-up period was from three to 34 months (mean, 28.2 months). RESULTS: The success rate of the MMC (93.3%) and 5-Fu (82.5%) groups was higher than that of the control group (52.6%) (p < 0.05). The main complications were corneal damage in the 5-Fu group and low intraocular pressure in the MMC group. CONCLUSIONS: 5-Fu and MMC can raise the success rate of filtering surgery. Because of their side-effects, the drugs should be used according to the patient's condition. LA: Chinese
