PURPOSE: To evaluate the existence of early visual field abnormalities with Frequency Doubling Technology (FDT) in eyes with glaucoma-like discs (GLDs). METHODS: Scanning laser tomography with the Heidelberg Retina Tomograph (HRT) and its diagnostic program was used to examine 36 eyes of 36 patients with GLDs in order to determine whether the presence of glaucomatous optic disc cupping was diagnostic of glaucoma. All eyes had normal intraocular pressure and normal results on computerized perimetry. The criteria for abnormality using the C-20 FDT program was the presence of five or more locations of significantly (p < 0.05) abnormal sensitivity in 17 locations examined. RESULTS: GLDs were classified as abnormal in 14 eyes (38.9%) and normal in 22 (61.1%), based on the results of FDT testing. The mean deviation (MD) and pattern standard deviation (PSD) in eyes with abnormal GLDs (MD = -3.2 ± 2.4 dB, PSD = 5.1 ± 1.2 dB) were significantly (p < 0.001) worse compared to deviations in normal eyes (MD = 0.2 ± 1.1 dB, PSD = 3.6 ± 0.6 dB). MD of the upper hemifield area was significantly (p < 0.01) lower than that of the lower hemifield area, especially at a point superior to Mariott's scotoma (p < 0.001). CONCLUSIONS: Testing using FDT can detect visual field abnormalities in patients with GLD. LA: Japanese
