Potential association of pseudoexfoliation syndrome (PEX) with age-related macular degeneration (ARMD)

PURPOSE: The authors report an unexpected association between PEX and ARMD. This was an additional result from a study that analyzed the possible systemic symptoms of pseudoexfoliation material in visceral organs. They reviewed data from the literature for both epidemiology and physiopathogeny. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The authors conducted an age- and sex-matched study of 142 patients in Brittany, 71 PEX and 71 controls (31 males and 40 females in the two groups). The statistical study was performed with Epi Info 6.0 software using X2 of the Mantel-Haenszel Test. RESULTS: A statistic positive relationship was found between PEX and ARMD (p = 0.02), both increasing with age. DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSIONS: Part of the epidemiology seems to be similar in PEX and ARMD, especially the role of the environment (particularly solar radiations, individual factors, and genetic predisposition. In May 1999, for the first time, a genetic localization of PEX was discovered on chromosome II, and nearly of one loci of ARMD multiple localizations. LA: French
