The authors evaluated the effect of 0.005% latanoprost instillation on accommodation and pupil size. It was instilled twice with an interval of five minutes in one eye of ten healthy volunteers aged from 26 to 31 years. Four hours later, an accommodometer was used to measure the far and near points, as well as the accommodation power, an infrared pupillometer was used to measure the pupil size, and an applanation tonometer for tonometry. A slight decrease in intraocular pressure was seen in all the eyes (p < 0.01). Hyperopia was induced in two eyes, myopia in two eyes, an increase of near point in four eyes, and mydriasis in four eyes. The changes observed in accommodation and pupil size seemed to be due to relaxation of the ciliary muscles and widening of the intermuscular space in the ciliary body. The authors advocate paying due attention to these complications when treating glaucoma with topical latanoprost. LA: Japanese
