OBJECTIVE: To observe the changes of free radicals and the activity of catalase in ocular tissue undergoing acute ocular hypertension status. METHODS: A model of ocular hypertension was established by perfusing physiological saline in anterior chamber, the g value and volume of free radical in meshwork and retina tissues were determined by ESR, the activity of catalase in retina, aqueous humor and plasma was determined in the meantime. RESULTS: After 0.5 hours up to the 3rd of ocular hypertension, the oxygen free radical could be determined in the retina and meshwork tissues while showing increasing tendency. The activity of catalase in the retina and aqueous humor was decreased, while the activity of catalase in the blood remained unchanged. CONCLUSIONS: The retina and meshwork tissues were damaged by free radicals in the acute hypertension status. It suggested that free radical scavengers can protect ocular tissue affected after acute angle-closed glaucoma. LA: Chinese
