AIM: To study the effect of combined phacoemulsification intraocular lens implantation and trabeculectomy in glaucoma and cataract patients. METHODS: A total of 125 eyes in 116 patients with coexisting glaucoma and cataract underwent the combined phacoemulsification, intraocular lens implantation and trabeculectomy. RESULTS: After a follow-up period of 5-26 months (means 12.6 months), the visual acuity (VA) of 125 eyes (100.0%) was improved. 42 eyes (33.6%) of them got the vision of 0.2 to 0.4; 43 eyes (34.4%) got the vision of 0.5 to 0.8; 21 eyes (16.8%) got the vision of 1.0 to 1.5. The intraocular pressure (IOP) of 119 eyes (95.2%) were normal without using anti-glaucoma medicine, while the IOP of six eyes (4.8%) became normal when topically applied anti-glaucoma medicine. Posterior capsular rupture occurred in seven eyes (5.6%), and slight hyphema in anterior chamber occurred in 22 eyes (17.6%) at two days postoperatively. CONCLUSION: Combined procedures have features of rapid visual acuity restoration, better effect of IOP declining and fewer complications. LA: Chinese
