Glaucoma is one of the world's major causes of blind eye diseases. The main risk factors of glaucoma is high intraocular pressure (IOP). The rush elevated IOP produces neuronic excitotoxicity. It can cause retinal ganglion cells (RGC) death and lead to the damage of nervus opticus finaly. The study of current found that N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) memantine, an uncompetive N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) receptor antagonist, can dramatically reduce the degree of nervus opticus damage caused by acute elevated IOP.
