Effect of phacoemulsification with foldable posterior chamber intraocular lens implantation in management of acute angle-closure glaucoma

AIM: To study the clinical effect of phacoemulsification with foldable posterior chamber intraocular lens (PC-IOL) implantation in the management of acute angle-closure glaucoma (ACG) with cataract. METHODS: Phacoemulsification with foldable PC-IOL implantation was performed in 42 cases (42 eyes). The best corrected visual acuity (BCVA), intraocular pressure (IOP), anterior chamber depth (ACD) and anterior chamber angle width were measured and recorded preoperatively and at postoperative 1 day, 1 week, 1 month and 3 months. RESULTS: The mean IOP decreased significantly after surgery (P < 0.05). The BCVA was significantly better after surgery (P < 0.05). The angles examined by gonioscopy were wider after surgery, and the extent of any touch or adhesion between iris and trabecula reduced. The ACD increased after surgery significantly (P < 0.05). CONCLUSION: Phacoemulsification with foldable PC-IOL implantation can substantially reduce IOP and improve visual acuity and can be one of the good alternatives in treatment of ACG with cataract.
