AIM: To observe whether Buyanghuanwu decoction (BYHWT) could protect retinal function and structure in the period of retinal ischemia-reperfusion in rats and its mechanism. METHODS: Retinal ischemia was induced by increasing the pressure to 14.63 KP via the anterior chamber, and then decreasing to normal value in SD rats. Then the rats were divided randomly into two groups. In group 1, BYHWT was taken 60 minutes after perfusion (10 g/kg body weight/day). The same dose of saline was taken 60 minutes after perfusion in group 2 as the control. Rats in two groups were sacrificed at 24 hours and 6 weeks after perfusion. The ultrastructural changes of retinal and optic nerve were observed. RESULTS: At 24 hours after perfusion significant ultrastructural changes of retinal ganglion and optic nerve were found in both groups but more significant in group 2 than in group 1. At 6 weeks after perfusion, the ultrastructural changes of retinal ganglion and optic nerve recovered in group 1 but remained significant in the control. CONCLUSION: BYHWT does have the protective effects on experimental, retinal ischemia-reperfusion injury in rats. LA: Chinese
