AIM: To evaluate the clinical effects and safety of Ahmed glaucoma valve (AGV) implantation for refractory glaucoma. METHODS: Eighteen cases (18 eyes) diagnosed with refractory glaucoma were implanted AGV, and followed up for 12 months. Intraocular pressure, visual acuity, and complications were observed. RESULTS: Intraocular pressure was decreased to (17.32 ± 5.47) mmHg, compared to (55.50 ± 19.47) mmHg before operation. Two eyes needed auxiliary treatment with anti-glaucoma drugs. Visual acuity was remained in 12 eyes, increased in 5 eyes and decreased in 1 eye. The main complications were early hypotony syndrome, temporary intraocular hypertension, shallow anterior chamber, anterior chamber hyphema, and tube obstruction, ect. CONCLUSION: AGV implantation for treating refractory glaucoma is very important and needs more researches on its effects and safety. LA: Chinese
