Anaesthesia for eye examination

Yalcin Cok O
Current Anaesthesia and Critical Care 2009; 20: 46-49

Ophthalmic examination under anaesthesia is required mainly in children and patients with special disorders. Management of these cases should be both safe and practical and should have no effect on the examination itself. Appropriate preoperative assessment and preparations should be tailored according to the features and the needs of the patients and the anaesthetic plan must be individualised for each case. Anaesthesia management providing minimal change in exact intraocular pressure and a complete access to eye are required whereas the prevention of adverse events related to the ophthalmic drugs and the procedure are essential. This article aims to review the main concerns of the anaesthetic management for eye examination.
