AIM: to investigate the ultrastructural changes of neurosensory retina cells under acute intraocular hypertension condition. METHODS: the experimental ocular hypertension rat was established by self-made pressure transmission apparatus. The ischemic neurosensory retina kept 2 hours and were taken out after the rats were killed in blood reperfusion 0, 8, 24, 48 hours and 7 days. The specimen were fixed, sliced and observed with electron microscope. RESULTS: after 8 hours reperfusing, apoptosis occurred in outer nuclear layer, edema and vacuole-like structure in mitochondria were appeared in nerve fiber layer. Apoptosis of retinal ganglion cells reached to the peak after 24 hours reperfusion and reduced after 48 hours. On 7th day, we found atrophy of retina, which had low density of cell and few apoptosis cells. CONCLUSION: all of the anatomic layers of neurosensory retina in acute intraocular hypertension may suffer from degeneration and atrophy at different degrees with different ultrastructural changes. Not only retinal ganglion cells but cells in other layers are dead in apoptosis procedure. LA: Chinese
