BACKGROUND: Glaucoma is the second cause of blindness worldwide after diabetic retinopathy. Among the predisposing factors are elevated intraocular pressure (IOP), hypertension (HT), diabetes mellitus (DM) and myopia. There is also a clear relationship between DM and increases in IOP, between hypertension and DM, and between HT and elevated IOP. Objectives: The aim of this study was to assess whether IOP and blood pressure is decreased in persons with DM type I after Fryette's occiput-atlas-axis (OAA) global technique. MATERIAL AND METHOD: We performed a simple-blind, randomized clinical trial in 78 patients with DM type I, aged between 18 and 45 years old. Blood pressure was measured and IOP in both eyes was assessed with a Goldamann applanation tonometer (GAT). RESULTS: There was a significant decrease in IOP in the left eye, with a mean value of 1.7368 mmHg (p = 0.015), as well as in the right eye, with a mean value of 1.8947 mmHg (p = 0.013). Systolic blood pressure showed a mean decrease of 5.1842 mmHg (p = 0.026). CONCLUSIONS: The OAA global technique applied to patients with DM type I significantly decreased IOP in both eyes and produced a nonsignificant decrease in systolic blood pressure.
