A survey of blindness and low vision oculopathy in rural areas of Tianjin

AIM: To investigate the prevalence and causes of low vision and blindness in rural areas of Tianjin. METHODS: Totally 6209 persons from rural areas of Tianjin underwent ophthalmic examination during August 2006 to July 2007. Examination data was statistically analysed. RESULTS: There were 326 cases (5.25%) who suffer from low vision and blindness. The prevalence of cataract was 1.58%, glaucoma was 1.32%, keratopathy was 0.68%, optic atrophy was 0.50%, diabetic retinopahty was 0.23%, amblyopia was 0.16%, rhegmatogenous retinal detachment was 0.13%, age related macular degeneration was 0.10%, and others were 0.56% respectively. CONCLUSION: The prevalence rates of low vision and blindness increased with age. Cataract and glaucoma are the major causes of blindness. In present period, surgery for cataract should be the significant work in the prevention and treatment of blindness. Health propaganda and mass screening should be pay more attention. LA: Chinese
