AIM: To compare the effect and safety on lowering of intraocular tension between travoprost eye drops and timolol. METHODS: This was a randomized parallel group control study. 0.04g/L travoprost once a day or 5g/L timolol twice a day was applied in 34 patients with primary open angle glaucoma (OPAG) and ocular hypertension (OHT) for 12 weeks. RESULTS: The daily average IOP in the experiment group decreased from 24.83 (plus or minus) 2.97mmHg to 16.13 (plus or minus) 2.92mmHg, and the reduction in the control group was from 23.96 (plus or minus) 3.62mmHg to 16.14 (plus or minus) 2.97mmHg. Conjunctival congestion increased obviously in experiment group, compared with that of the control group. CONCLUSION: It is demonstrated that travoprost is effective and safe in reducing IOP in patients with OPAG and OHT. LA: Chinese
