AIM: To explore modeling method and characteristic of intraocular hypertension in cat. METHODS: Ten healthy adult cats (20 eyes) were involved in this study. Intraocular hypertension was build by injecting 20g/L cellogran into anterior chamber of single eye, with another eye being control group. And the model was assessed according to the hypertensive model standard and multifocal electroretinogram (mfERG). RESULTS: The basic intraocular pressure (IOP) was 15mmHg. 10 eyes showed hypertension after the fist injection while 6 of those lasted 7-15 days. The average IOP ranged from 28 to 39 mmHg, and peak IOP was 35 to 49 mmHg. The success ratio for this model was 60% after single injection. The IOP of the model eyes obvious-ly increased at different time points after injection, and showed significant difference when compared with eys before modeling and the control eyes. The mfERG changed obviously in the first order kernel after acute IOP increased. Total response density of wave P1 after modeling were lower than those before modeling (P < 0.05). The response densities of wave P1 of each rings decreased after modeling (P < 0.01). The peak latency of the third ring after modeling was longer than before, with significant difference (P < 0.05). CONCLUSION: Intraocular hypertension in cat models can be established by injecting 20g/L cellogran into anterior chamber and will last for over one week. Changes of the mfERG accord with the standards of glaucoma in animal model. LA: Chinese
