Matrix metalloproteinase-2 (MMP-2) and matrix metalloproteinase-9(MMP-9) which belong to the family of matrix metalloproteinases(MMPs) are Ca (2+) and Zn(+2) dependent endoproteinases. The two compose Gelatinas, one subfamily of MMPs, involve in the degradation of a wide variety of the extracellular matrix (ECM) components. The proteolytic activity of MMPs depend on the MMPs/TIMPs balance. MMP-2 and MMP-9, distributing more extensively than other MMPs, involved in many eye diseases, such as pterygium, keratitis, cataract, glaucoma, vitreoretinopathy, maculopathy et al. In this review, we mainly focus on the structure, functions and contributions of MMP-2 and MMP-9 in the eye diseases, highlighting recent research advance. LA: Chinese
