Use of fugo plasma blade in ophthalmic surgery

Techniques in Ophthalmology 2010; 8: 26-30

This article provides technical information on the latest method of creating a surgical incision, namely, plasma ablation surgery. The article focuses on US Food and Drug Administration-cleared ocular procedures using the Fugo plasma blade in cataract anterior capsulotomy, bloodless iridotomy, and a major advancement in glaucoma filtering surgery called Singh filtration or transciliary filtration, wherein fluid is drained from behind the iris. This approach dramatically reduces the force on the back of the iris, thereby eliminating the force needed to push the iris forward against the cornea, and this approach virtually eliminates postoperative flat anterior chambers. Many other non-US Food and Drug Administration-approved procedures are under investigation worldwide.
