Ischemic optic neuropathy (ION) is known for its characteristic premorbid optic disc morphology. As compared to glaucoma, a disease that also results in visual field damage, the changes observed in the optic nerve head morphology appear to be more modest in the ION eyes. These findings were originally investigated using ophthalmoscopic examinations or by planimetry from photographs. However, with the development of new optic disc imaging devices, it is now possible to quantitatively measure optic disc morphology with higher accuracy. The current study used optic disc imaging devices to analyze ION eyes and demonstrated that small cupping was a risk factor for ION onset, and that mild cupping and prominent thinning of the retinal nerve fiber layer occurred after the onset of ION.
