Local anesthesia for the ophthalmic surgery: Select the best technique for your patient

The majority of the ophthalmic surgical procedures are performed under local anesthesia as it provides excellent operating conditions for the surgery. The local anesthetic techniques are easy to perform and have high success rate, but carry inherent risk of life threatening and vision threatening complications. To reduce complications of local anesthesia for ophthalmic surgery, it is essential to have an up to date knowledge of the techniques. The objective of this review article is to provide the essential knowledge for safe performance of the block and current trends in ophthalmic local anesthesia techniques. Additionally, this review emphasizes the need of proper perioperative care to reduce the incidence of complications. Anesthesiologists, ophthalmologists, and clinicians may also benefit from this article.
