AIM: To investigate clinical effect of temporal small incision extracapsular cataract extraction (ECCE) and intraocular lens implantation with topical and subconjunctival anesthesia. METHODS: Totally 32 patients 40 eyes with cataract after trabeculectomy underwent the small incision ECCE and intraocular lens implantation surgery by topical anesthesia and subconjunctival anesthesia (20g/L lidocaine), the anesthetic and therapeutic effect of surgery were evaluated. RESULTS: All patients had the desired analgesic effect and successful surgery procedure, postoperative visual acuity <0.1 in 5 eyes (12.5%),, visual acuity from 0.1 to 0.4 in 9 eyes (22.5%), visual acuity (greater-than or equal to) 0.5 in 26 eyes (65.0%); All the visual acuity were improved. CONCLUSION: The temporal small incision ECCE and intraocular lens implantation surgery by topical anesthesia combined with subconjunctival anesthesia is a simple and effective surgery for the patients with cataract after trabeculectomy surgery, especially in primary hospitals with cheap surgical equipment.
