The authors evaluated the role of myopia-shaped disc in glaucomatous peripapillary atrophy. Of patients with normal-tension glaucoma, they selected 24 eyes with myopia-shaped discs, and 21 eyes without. The optic disc was subjected to image analysis including tomography of the retina. The findings were compared with the visual field defects. Eyes with myopia-shaped discs showed greater peripapillary atrophy than those without, showing a similar visual field defect. Parameters for peripapillary atrophy were not significantly correlated with visual field indices in eyes with myopia-shaped disc. There is a possibility that glaucomatous peripapillary atrophy may have a different pathophysiological significance between eyes with and without myopia-shaped disc. LA: Japanese
