OBJECTIVE: Evaluation of the effects of topic ibopamine (a dopaminergic agonist) in eyes with primary open-angle glaucoma (POAG) and in normal eyes. SETTING: Department of Glaucoma Federal University of Goias, and Department of Glaucoma of Brazilian Center of Ocular Surgery, Goiania. METHODS: Thirty POAG patients (60 eyes) and 30 normal patients (60 eyes) underwent an ibopamine provocative test. The ibopamine test was considered positive when, 45 minutes after instillation of two drops of 2% ibopamine, five minutes apart, the intraocular pressure (IOP) elevation was ≥ 4 mmHg. IOP was also measured in all eyes 45 minutes after instillation of two drops of 10% phenylephrine. RESULTS: The ibopamine test was positive for 88% of the glaucomatous eyes and 6.6% of the normal eyes, and there was no significant difference in IOP after instillation of 10% phenylephrine. CONCLUSIONS: The results of this preliminary study suggests that topical 2% ibopamine is a promising alternative to evaluate outflow system impairment in eyes with glaucoma. LA: Portuguese
