Diseases are often manifestation of insufficient or successive production of certain protein. If the production of these proteins is halted, ailments can be treated or cured. In antisense technology, synthetically produced complementary molecules bind to mRNA blocking the final step of protein synthesis i.e. translation. This causes inhibition of production of specific diseases related protein. Currently, antisense technology is being used to treat a variety of disease such as cancer, myasthenia gravis, glaucoma and arthritis.
