Controversies in pediatric glaucoma surgical treatment-taking both sides!

Relevance: Optimal management of pediatric glaucoma remains controversial, especially for refractory cases. Many of our surgical interventions have both up- and down-sides for young children, and the nullright procedurenull may vary depending upon the surgeon, institution, and child. Methods: This case-based workshop will feature moderated pointcounterpoint debate among the presenters, as they openly discuss the pros and cons of various interventions for children with glaucoma in need of surgery. Audience participation will be encouraged. Content: Controversies to be addressed include (but are not limited to the following): (1) nullTo Mitomycin or not to Mitomycin - that is the questionnull; (2) nullCan I do anything I want to?null - the ethics of applyingnewnulladultnull surgical glaucoma procedures in children; (3) nullForks in the road to Schlemm canalnull - comparing various angle surgeries including goniotomy, trabeculotomy by suture vs trabectome vs iScience probe vs. combined nullotomy/ectomynull; (4) nullPlumbing 101 - What tube do I use?null; and (5) nullLicense to killnull - options for cyclodestruction. Conclusions: At the conclusion of this workshop, attendees will be able to do the following: (1) recognize the major factors to be considered when choosing appropriate treatment for children with glaucoma who require surgery; (2) consider the ethical implications of applying new surgical interventions as treatment for childhood glaucoma.
