[Objective] To evaluate the effect of Ahmed glaucoma valve (AGV) implantation for refractory glaucoma, and to prevent the complications. [Methods] Twenty - three patients underwent Ahmed glaucoma valve implantation were summarized retrospectively. The visual acuity, intraocular pressure, postoperative complications and the effective rate were observed comparatively. The mean period of follow - up was 6-18 months. [Results] The postoperative best corrected visual acuities were stable in 8 eyes, dropped in 3 eyes and improved in 12 eyes. The success rate for intraocular pressure was 86.96% after the operation. The common postoperative complications included transient flat anterior chamber and high intraocular pressure in early stage, hyphema, and fibrillation in late stage. [Conclusion] Ahmed glaucoma valve implantation is one of the effective methods for refractory glaucoma.
