Background and objectives: Overweight and ultimately Obesity are independent risk factors for many chronic diseases and is also associated with increased sympathetic tone, proved by previous studies. Increased Intra Ocular Pressure (IOP) is the major risk factor for development of Glaucoma. Our study was contemplated to know the association of IOP, Obesity & Blood Pressure (BP) in healthy young adults. Methodology: The study was carried out on 50 young healthy adults of both sex (normal weight 25 & Obese 25) aged between 18-21 yrs. IOP was measured using Schiotz tonometer in supine position and BP was recorded using AD Power lab Instrument. Statistical analysis was done using chi-square test, Unpaired 't' Test and pearson correlation coefficient test. p < 0.05 was considered statistically significant. Results: The IOP, Systolic & Diastolic BP were higher in obese group (p<0.001). Males had higher IOP when compared to females in both the groups (p>0.05).There exists a positive correlation between IOP, obesity, and BP (p < 0.05). Conclusion: IOP was positively correlated with obesity and BP. Association was more with Systolic BP when compared to Diastolic BP. The morbidity related to increased IOP in obese person can be prevented by monitoring IOP at regular intervals and weight reduction as a part of physical fitness.
