Glaucoma is now considered to be primarily an optic neuropathy, not a disease of the anterior chamber angle. Although intraocular pressure remains a crucial variable, the relationship between increased intraocular pressure and glaucoma is now recognised as being less simple than formerly believed. The new approach to the disease is reflected in a review by the National Board of Health and Welfare of the most recent advances in our knowledge of open-angle glaucoma, advances made possible by improvements in diagnostics and epidemiology. The prognosis of glaucoma is considerably better than often appreciated, by the profession and by the general public.LA: Swedish
