We developed a new technique for performing flicker perimetry using a square-wave flickering target presented on the monitor of a personal computer. Flicker sensitivity was determined for 4 temporal frequencies (5, 10, 15, and 20 Hz) at 25 visual field locations in the central 30 degrees of visual field. Flicker sensitivity was measured by a method of limits. Both eyes of 28 subjects between 12 and 80 years of age with normal vision and of 2 patients with Posner-Schlossman syndrome were examined. The results were analyzed for the effects of age, visual field eccentricity, and Posner- Schlossman syndrome on flicker sensitivity. Our results indicate that flicker sensitivity declines with age and eccentricity, and that flicker perimetry can detect loss of sensitivity resulting from temporary increase in intraocular pressure. Our technique provides a rapid and sensitive clinical test for the early detection of compromised visual function in patients with glaucoma.
