We evaluated the long-term (longer than 2 years) outcome and the complications of cyclocryotherapy and transscleral cyclophotocoagulation with a diode laser (TSCPC) in 22 eyes of 22 patients, 15 male and 7 female with poorly controlled glaucoma. Twenty of the patients had neovascular glaucoma and the other 2 patients had secondary glaucoma resulting from uveitis and angle closure glaucoma. We performed cyclocryotherapy in 13 patients (9 male and 4 female) and TSCPC in 9 patients (6 male and 3 female). In each surgical group there were 2 eyes in which intraocular pressure (IOP) could not be controlled after the first operation and one or two additional operations were performed. In the cyclocryotherapy group, we were able to decrease lOP in all cases except 1, but the final outcome was phthisis in 8 (62%) of the eyes. Phthisis occurred in only 1 eye in the TSCPC group but IOP remained uncontrolled in 3 (33%) of the cases. We were unable to preserve visual acuity using the two therapies together. There was no statistically significant difference between the outcomes in the two groups, showing that TSCPC was not more effective than cyclocryotherapy in the treatment of refractory glaucoma.LA: Japanese
