This study demonstrates what the authors call the pseudodeffects of the retinal nerve fiber layer. They report 13 patients in which they found those defects. The pseudodefects were found along the major retinal blood vessels. Within one to four disc diameters from the optic disc margin, they looked like oblong or braid shaped chinks or cracks within the normal retinal nerve fiber structure. In three eyes they could be followed up to in the periphery. In five of six patients OCT scanning showed a thinning of the retinal nerve fiber layer at the pseudodeffect. The defects occurred in high myopes, patients were older than four years, in two patients changes were seen bilaterally, mean optic disc size of 1.4 mm2 was smaller than the mean in normal disc size, and mean decrease in retinal thickness was 80 μm or 37% of the pseudodeffect.
