The occurrence of blood viscosity alterations was studied in patients suffering from primary open angle glaucoma, in order to understand the pathogenesis of visual field damage progression in these patients. The analyzed parameters were similar between age-matched controls and patients. The findings seem to confirm the role of intraocular pressure in the pathogenesis of visual field defects in glaucomatous patients; the alterations in blood viscosity are perhaps responsible for this kind of defect in low-tension glaucoma.
