Currently, glaucoma therapy is directed at lowering intraocular pressure (IOP) using pharmacologic means or surgery. Lowering IOP is presently the only way of treating glaucoma, despite the inadequacies of this method. The goal for the future must be to discover a therapy that preserves visual function irrespective of the cause of glaucomatous optic neuropathy. This article discusses neuroprotection as treatment for glaucoma and the challenges involved in finding a usable neuroprotectant.
