OBJECTIVE: To investigate the short- and mid-term efficacy of gold ring implantation through the anterior chamber angle for refractory glaucoma. METHODS: Twenty-nine 29 cases (29 eyes) with glaucoma, whose intraocular pressure (IOP) had not been controlled satisfactorily with antiglaucoma drugs, underwent gold ring implantation through anterior chamber angle. RESULTS: After (7.3±5.3) months of follow-up (range, 2-23 months), the IOP had decreased from 51.34±13.69 mmHg preoperatively to 26.59±11.27 mmHg postoperatively. The total success rate was 72.41%, 76.92% for non-neovascular glaucoma, and 33.33% for neovascular glaucoma. Complications included hyphema, flat anterior chamber, early postoperative hypotony, anterior uveitis, implanted gold ring touch to cornea, implant exposure, exudative choroidal detachment, etc. CONCLUSIONS: Gold ring implantation through anterior chamber angle is effective in the management of refractory glaucoma.
