Glaucoma and myopia (letter, comment)

In this letter to the editor, the corresponding authors discuss the article by Mitchell et al. on 'the relationship between glaucoma and myopia'. They update their findings in the Barbados Eye Study. Among the 4036 black participants, a higher prevalence of myopia was found in persons with suspected open-angle glaucoma, other types of glaucoma, and ocular hypertension. The odds ratios were 1.48 for the association with glaucoma and 1.43 for the association with ocular hypertension. The numbers in the Blue Mountain study are somewhat higher than those reported here in blacks, being a two- to three-fold increased risk. One reason for the difference may have been the spherical equivalent refraction. The Blue Mountain authors also presented evidence for a dose response between the level of myopia and the prevalence of glaucoma.
